Quantity

The W25Q16BVSIG is a 16M-bit (2MB) Serial NOR Flash Memory IC from Winbond, designed for embedded systems that require reliable non-volatile storage in a compact package. It belongs to the W25Q SpiFlash® family and supports SPI, Dual SPI, and Quad SPI communication, providing higher data-transfer performance than conventional single-I/O serial flash devices.

With 16 Mbits (2 MBytes) of storage capacity, the W25Q16BV is suitable for storing firmware, boot code, configuration parameters, calibration information, graphics, lookup tables, fonts, data logs, and other information that must remain stored when power is removed.

Memory Organization

The 16M-bit memory array provides a total capacity of 2,097,152 bytes (2MB).

The flash memory is organized into:

  • 8,192 programmable pages of 256 bytes each
  • 512 erasable sectors of 4KB each
  • 32 blocks of 64KB each
  • Supports smaller sector erase operations for applications where only part of the memory needs to be updated

This architecture makes the device suitable for both firmware storage and applications requiring frequent updates to relatively small areas of memory.

SPI Interface

The W25Q16BV communicates with a host microcontroller or processor through a serial peripheral interface and supports multiple transfer modes:

Standard SPI – 1-bit I/O
Uses the conventional MOSI/MISO serial interface.

Dual SPI – 2-bit I/O
Uses two data lines simultaneously to increase read throughput.

Quad SPI – 4-bit I/O
Uses four data lines simultaneously for significantly faster memory access.

The device can therefore be used in systems requiring simple SPI storage as well as higher-speed embedded applications.

Pin Configuration – SOIC-8

Pin Function Description
1 /CS Chip Select
2 DO / IO1 Serial Data Output / Data I/O 1
3 /WP / IO2 Write Protect / Data I/O 2
4 GND Ground
5 DI / IO0 Serial Data Input / Data I/O 0
6 CLK Serial Clock
7 /HOLD / IO3 Hold Input / Data I/O 3
8 VCC Power Supply

When Quad SPI operation is enabled, the conventional SPI signal pins are reused as four bidirectional I/O lines.

Supported Memory Operations

The W25Q16BV supports common Serial Flash commands including:

  • Read Data
  • Fast Read
  • Dual Output Fast Read
  • Dual I/O Fast Read
  • Quad Output Fast Read
  • Quad I/O Fast Read
  • Page Program
  • Sector Erase
  • Block Erase
  • Chip Erase
  • Write Enable / Disable
  • Read Status Register
  • Write Status Register
  • JEDEC Device ID Read
  • Power-Down
  • Release from Power-Down

Electrical Characteristics

The device is designed primarily for 3.3V systems, with an operating supply range of approximately 2.7V to 3.6V.

Important: The W25Q16BV should not be connected directly to 5V logic unless suitable level shifting is provided. When using it with a 5V microcontroller such as some Arduino boards, use appropriate 3.3V power and logic-level conversion.

For 3.3V controllers such as ESP32, ESP8266, STM32 and many modern embedded processors, the electrical interface is generally much more straightforward.

Typical Applications

The W25Q16BVSIG can be used for:

  • Microcontroller firmware storage
  • BIOS and boot-code storage
  • Embedded Linux boot data
  • IoT devices
  • Robotics controllers
  • Arduino projects
  • ESP32 and ESP8266 projects
  • STM32 systems
  • FPGA configuration storage
  • Display graphics and fonts
  • Audio or waveform data storage
  • Configuration and calibration data
  • Data logging
  • Industrial control systems
  • Consumer electronics
  • Network equipment
  • PCB repair and replacement
  • Firmware backup and recovery

Why Use External SPI Flash?

Microcontrollers often have limited internal non-volatile memory. Adding the W25Q16BVSIG provides an additional 2MB of non-volatile storage while requiring only a small number of MCU pins.

Its SPI architecture, compact 8-pin package, sector-based erase capability and high-density storage make it a practical solution for embedded applications where EEPROM capacity is insufficient but larger storage technologies such as SD cards are unnecessary.

Note

This is a 3.3V-class Serial Flash memory device intended for electronic assembly, repair, development and embedded-system applications. Verify the package, operating voltage, pinout and programming requirements of your target circuit before installation.
