A4988 Green Stepper Motor Driver Module – 2A, 35V, 1/16 Microstepping
The A4988 Green Stepper Motor Driver Module is a compact microstepping driver designed for controlling bipolar stepper motors. Based on the Allegro A4988 driver IC, it combines dual DMOS full-bridge outputs with an integrated translator, allowing a microcontroller to control motor movement using simple STEP and DIR signals.
The module supports five selectable step resolutions from full-step down to 1/16 microstepping, along with adjustable current limiting and built-in protection functions. It is widely used with Arduino, ESP32, CNC controllers, 3D printers, robotics, and positioning systems.

Microstepping Control
The A4988 simplifies stepper motor control through its integrated translator. Each pulse applied to the STEP input advances the motor by one step or microstep, while the DIR input determines the direction of rotation.
The MS1, MS2, and MS3 inputs allow selection between:
Full Step – 1/2 Step – 1/4 Step – 1/8 Step – 1/16 Step
Microstepping can provide smoother movement, reduced vibration, and increased positioning resolution compared with full-step operation.
Adjustable Current Limiting
The onboard potentiometer is used to adjust the driver's current limit to suit the connected stepper motor.
Correct current adjustment is important. Setting the current too high can cause excessive heating of the A4988 and motor, while setting it too low can reduce available motor torque or cause missed steps.
The 2A-per-phase figure is the maximum rating of the A4988 driver under appropriate operating and cooling conditions. It should not be interpreted as a guaranteed continuous current for every green A4988 module.
Motor Compatibility
The module is designed primarily for bipolar stepper motors, including many commonly used 4-wire stepper motors.
Compatible applications can include suitable NEMA 8, NEMA 11, NEMA 14, NEMA 17, and other bipolar stepper motors, provided the motor current is within the driver's practical operating range.
Six-wire and eight-wire stepper motors may also be usable when correctly configured for bipolar operation.
Applications
Ideal for 3D printers, small CNC machines, Arduino and ESP32 projects, robotics, XY positioning systems, camera sliders, plotters, linear stages, automated mechanisms, educational electronics, and precision motion-control projects.
Important Note
The A4988 module has no reverse-voltage protection on the motor supply. Incorrect VMOT polarity can permanently damage the driver.
A suitable electrolytic capacitor should be installed close to the VMOT and GND connections to help suppress potentially damaging LC voltage spikes, particularly when using longer power leads.
Always set the current limit correctly before operating the motor, and provide adequate cooling when operating at higher currents.
Do not connect or disconnect the stepper motor while the driver is powered. Doing so can damage the A4988.
