ENC28J60 Ethernet LAN Network Module – SPI, RJ45, 3.3V

The ENC28J60 Ethernet LAN Network Module is a compact wired networking module designed to add Ethernet connectivity to Arduino, AVR, STM32, PIC and other SPI-compatible microcontrollers.

Based on the Microchip ENC28J60 Stand-Alone Ethernet Controller, the module integrates the Ethernet controller, 25MHz crystal oscillator, RJ45 network connector and supporting circuitry on a compact PCB.

It communicates with the host microcontroller through a standard SPI interface at speeds up to 20MHz, making it suitable for embedded web servers, networked sensors, automation, robotics and IoT applications.

10Mbps Wired Ethernet

The ENC28J60 provides a 10BASE-T Ethernet interface with a maximum port speed of:

10Mbps

This is suitable for many embedded applications where high network bandwidth is not required, including sensor monitoring, automation and microcontroller-based web servers.

The ENC28J60 is also designed to operate on networks containing compatible 10/100/1000BASE-T equipment, although the module itself communicates at 10Mbps.

SPI Interface

Communication between the module and the host microcontroller is performed through SPI.

The ENC28J60 supports SPI clock speeds up to:

20MHz

This allows it to interface with a wide range of embedded controllers.

Typical interface signals include:

  • SCK – SPI Clock
  • SI / MOSI – Serial Data Input
  • SO / MISO – Serial Data Output
  • CS – Chip Select
  • INT – Interrupt
  • RESET – Reset
  • CLKOUT – Programmable Clock Output
  • VCC – 3.3V Power
  • GND – Ground

Always follow the markings printed on the actual PCB when wiring the module.

Integrated 8KB Packet Buffer

The ENC28J60 includes 8KB of dual-port SRAM for Ethernet packet transmission and reception.

It provides features including:

  • Configurable TX/RX Buffer
  • Hardware-Managed Receive FIFO
  • Internal DMA
  • Automatic CRC Generation
  • Packet Filtering
  • Hardware-Assisted Checksum Calculation
  • Automatic Rejection of Erroneous Packets

RJ45 Ethernet Connection

The onboard RJ45 connector allows the module to connect directly to a compatible Ethernet network using a standard Ethernet cable.

It can be connected to devices such as:

  • Network Switches
  • Routers
  • Local Area Networks
  • Computers
  • Embedded Networking Equipment

3.3V Power Supply

The module is designed for a:

3.3V DC Supply

The ENC28J60 IC itself operates from approximately 3.1–3.6V, with 3.3V nominal operation.

Although specified ENC28J60 digital inputs are 5V tolerant, this does not mean the module should be powered from 5V.

Use 3.3V for the module's power supply.

Microcontroller Compatibility

The standard SPI interface makes the module suitable for many platforms, including:

  • Arduino
  • AVR
  • STM32
  • PIC
  • ESP32
  • ARM Microcontrollers
  • Other SPI-Compatible Controllers

A suitable ENC28J60 software library or TCP/IP stack is required.

Arduino Applications

With an appropriate ENC28J60 library, Arduino projects can implement functions such as:

  • Embedded Web Servers
  • TCP/IP Communication
  • UDP Communication
  • Remote Sensor Monitoring
  • Network-Controlled Relays
  • Data Logging
  • Home Automation
  • IoT Devices

Network Features

The ENC28J60 supports:

  • Unicast Packets
  • Multicast Packets
  • Broadcast Packets
  • Full-Duplex Operation
  • Half-Duplex Operation
  • Programmable Packet Filtering
  • Automatic CRC Generation
  • Collision Detection
  • Automatic Retransmission
  • Automatic Polarity Detection & Correction

Applications

Ideal for:

  • Arduino Ethernet Projects
  • Embedded Web Servers
  • IoT Devices
  • Wired Sensor Networks
  • Home Automation
  • Industrial Monitoring
  • Network-Controlled Relays
  • Remote Data Acquisition
  • Robotics
  • Access Control
  • Alarm Systems
  • Smart Home Projects
  • STM32 Projects
  • PIC & AVR Projects
  • Educational Networking Projects

Important Notes

  • Ethernet port speed is 10Mbps, not 100Mbps.
  • Module supply voltage is 3.3V DC.
  • 5V-tolerant digital inputs do not mean that the VCC pin accepts 5V.
  • Uses an SPI interface, not UART or I²C.
  • A compatible software library or TCP/IP stack is required.
  • The ENC28J60 does not provide a preprogrammed unique MAC address; the application should be configured with an appropriate MAC address.
  • Always verify the PCB pin labels before wiring the module.
