ESP-01 / ESP-01S USB Adapter – CH340G USB-to-UART Programmer
The ESP-01 USB Adapter is a compact USB-to-serial interface designed specifically for ESP8266 ESP-01 and ESP-01S WiFi modules.
It features an onboard CH340G USB-to-UART converter, 3.3V interface circuitry and a dedicated 2 × 4 ESP-01 socket, allowing the WiFi module to be connected directly to a computer without jumper wires.
It is ideal for serial communication, AT-command testing, debugging and, with the appropriate boot-mode configuration, firmware programming.

Direct ESP-01 Connection
The adapter includes a dedicated yellow 2 × 4 socket matching the ESP-01 pin arrangement.
Simply insert a compatible:
into the socket with the correct orientation.
This eliminates the need to manually connect:
using individual jumper wires.
CH340G USB-to-UART Converter
The onboard CH340G converts the computer's USB connection into UART serial communication suitable for the ESP8266.
Once the appropriate CH340 driver is installed, the adapter appears as a serial COM port on the computer.
It can then be used with compatible software for:
- AT Command Communication
- Serial Monitoring
- Debugging
- Firmware Tools
- ESP8266 Development
3.3V ESP Interface
Although the adapter receives approximately 5V from the computer's USB port, the ESP-01 itself requires a 3.3V supply and 3.3V logic.
The adapter provides the necessary onboard power circuitry for the ESP module.
This is especially useful because an ESP8266 can draw significant current during WiFi transmission and should not normally be powered from a weak microcontroller 3.3V output.
1000µF Filter Capacitor
The large onboard capacitor helps stabilize the power supply during ESP8266 current fluctuations.
Stable power is important because insufficient power can cause:
- Random ESP8266 Resets
- Failed WiFi Connections
- Boot Problems
- Unstable Serial Communication
- Firmware Upload Failures
Programming & Firmware Upload
This style of adapter can be used for ESP-01 firmware programming when the ESP8266 is placed into the correct bootloader mode.
For firmware flashing, GPIO0 must be LOW during reset/startup.
Depending on the exact adapter revision, this may require a modification, jumper or manually pulling GPIO0 LOW.
Therefore, this basic adapter should not automatically be assumed to provide one-button or automatic programming unless that feature is present on the actual PCB.
Compatible Development Tools
Depending on configuration, it can be used with software such as:
- Arduino IDE
- ESP8266 Flash Tools
- Serial Terminal Software
- AT Command Terminals
- ESP8266 Development Tools
Applications
Ideal for:
- ESP-01 Testing
- ESP-01S Testing
- ESP8266 Serial Communication
- AT Command Configuration
- Firmware Updates
- ESP8266 Programming
- WiFi Module Debugging
- Arduino Development
- IoT Development
- Home Automation Projects
- Electronics Workshops
Important Notes
- ESP-01 / ESP-01S module is not included.
- Designed specifically for ESP8266 ESP-01-style modules.
- Insert the ESP-01 in the correct orientation before connecting the adapter to USB.
-
The ESP8266 operates at 3.3V logic.
- The adapter itself is powered from the computer's USB port.
- CH340 drivers may be required depending on the operating system.
-
Basic versions of this adapter may require GPIO0 to be manually pulled LOW for firmware flashing.
- Do not assume automatic programming unless the actual adapter has the required auto-programming circuitry or programming switch.
